Lead-Free Tapware Regulations Coming in 2026 – Here’s What You Need to Know

From May 2026, new rules will come into effect across New Zealand requiring all tapware and plumbing products that supply drinking water to be lead-free.

This change is part of an update to the New Zealand Building Code (Clause G12: Water Supplies), aimed at protecting Kiwis from potential lead exposure through household plumbing fittings. While the risk from existing tapware is generally low, studies have shown that traces of lead can leach from brass tapware and fittings into drinking water, especially when water has been sitting in the pipes overnight.

So, the Government’s moving to phase out tapware that contains lead, and from May 2026, only products with a lead content of 0.25% or less (in parts that contact drinking water) will be allowed for sale or installation.

What This Means for Homeowners

If you’re building new, renovating, or just want peace of mind about your drinking water, now’s a great time to start thinking about switching to Lead-Free Tapware.

There’s no requirement to rush out and replace everything straight away — your existing taps don’t suddenly become unsafe — but it’s a smart move to start planning ahead.

The great news is that many manufacturers already have lead-free tapware ranges available, in both modern and classic styles. These new fittings meet the upcoming standards and will future-proof your home for years to come.

Our Advice

If you’d like to get ahead of the game, we can help you find and install lead-free tapware that fits your setup and budget. Whether it’s just your kitchen mixer or a full fit-out, we’ll make it simple.

If you’re not ready to replace your taps just yet, that’s fine too — just run your tap for about 30 seconds before using it for drinking or cooking, especially if the tap hasn’t been used overnight. That helps flush out any water that’s been sitting in contact with brass fittings.
